Sample Day-by-Day Itinerary:
Day 1 - USA - Italy Depart USA for our overnight flights to Rome . Dinner and breakfast are served on board.
Day 2 - Arrive Rome - Assisi Upon arrival your escort will warmly greet you this morning and welcome you to Italy. Board our deluxe motor coach for our two hour scenic drive to Assisi. Upon arrival in Assisi we will check in your hotel and have time to rest and refresh before dinner. Your tour escort can suggest sights or walks for you to enjoy if you are feeling adventurous.
Day 3 - Assisi
Breakfast at the hotel. After morning prayer we will meet our local guide and start our walking sightseeing tour. We will be visiting the major sites associated with St. Francis, the Saint who shaped Christianity. We will visit the Basilica of St. Francis: the upper Basilica with Giotto frescoes representing St. Francis life, the lower Basilica and the Tomb of St. Francis. After some free time for our own prayers and private reflections, we will continue our tour and visit the Basilica of St. Clare, dedicated to the faithful disciple of St. Francis. This Basilica was erected between 1257 and 1265 on the ruins of St. Giorgio Church, where St. Francis learned to read and write when he was a child, and contains the Saint’s incorrupt body. In the crucifix chapel we will admire the original crucifix from which Christ spoke to St. Francis in San Damiano telling him “repair my church, it is all falling in ruins”. St. Francis repaired San Damiano, then realized he was meant to repair the entire Church of Christendom: in this chapel St. Francis was canonized on July 16th 1228. Our tour will end with the visit of the Chiesa Nuova, built over the home of Francis’ family. After some free time on our own for lunch we will transfer to the Shrine of Rivo Torto: this neo-gothic church was built in 1854 to protect the Sacro Tugurio – the hovel that was the birthplace of the Franciscan order. It was there where St. Francis dictated the First Rule, which was approved orally by Pope Innocent III, and it is the place where he first started calling his disciples the Friars Minor. At the end of visit we will transfer back to Assisi for the balance of the day at our leisure. Dinner this evening will be served at hotel restaurants. Overnight.
Day 4 -
San Damiano & HermitageBreakfast at the hotel. This morning we will visit – with our Franciscan Priest guide - two important places associated with St. Francis: the Hermitage (Eremo delle Carceri) and the Church of San Damiano. We will transfer by taxi to the Eremo delle Carceri, the small hermitage (called the prisons’ hermitage), where everything looks humble and poor, where silence and prayers are the Only * sounds you hear, while earth and sky gently smile on this place. In St. Francis’ time there were just some caves and a small chapel. Here the first friars built some “shelters” made of mud and reeds. Here St. Francis often retired to pray. After our visit we will have time for our private reflections. Then we will transfer by taxi to San Damiano, where St. Francis wrote his “Cantico di Frate Sole” (Canticle of Brother Sun). The Saint gave this place to St. Clare and “her ladies” wed to Holy Poverty. Transfer back to Assisi where we will have some free time for lunch on our own. After lunch we will have the balance of the day at our leisure (they can visit today Santa Maria degli Angeli if not possible on arrival day). Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 5 - 7 -
AssisiEnjoy free days in Assisi to rest, relax, pray, reflect or explore. If you would like you may travel by train to near by Florence, Siena, or Pisa for additional exploration (train is additional cost).
Day 8 - Assisi - Rome - USA
Depart from Assisi in the early morning for Rome for our return flights to the USA. We fondly say, Arrivederci Roma!
