Welcoming the New Year!

In the first part of January we continue to rejoice and celebrate Christ's birth. We have the wonderfulfeasts of Mary where wehonorMary's highest title, and then we follow the Magi to the crib as they bring their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh on the Epiphany. Finally we reach the culmination of this season with the Baptism of Our Lord by St. John the Baptist. With a touch of sadness we take down our decorations and enter into the liturgical period known as Ordinary Time where we will devote ourselves to the mystery of Christ in its entirety.

This is a time of growth and an opportunity to allow the dignity of Sunday to shine forth. The opening days of January may be cold and nature bleak, but the Church still glows with the peace and joy of Christmas. You may also have adopted a New Years resolution as a way to better yourself in 2011! Whether it is a bad habit you are trying to change or a good habit you're trying to put into place, we invite you to think of something God would like you to change. We invite you to take a deep breath, say an ardent prayer, and try to tackle this resolution head on. While God sometimes asks of us what seems impossible, it never is, for He never gives a goal beyond our reach. As St. Francis of Assisi said, "Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible."

May this New Year bring you the spiritual blessings and peace your soul longs for, and may your habits over the years become stepping stones to bring you home safely.

IRELAND: The 50th International Eucharistic Congress

Ireland is the third-largest island in Europe and is surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. Long known as the "Isle of Saints and Scholars", Ireland was the epicenter of Christian learning while the rest of Europe was in the Dark Ages. As the home of Saints Patrick, Bridget, Columba, and many more, Ireland also provides many faith-based attractions- from the Book of Kells, an elaborately scripted 9th-century version of the Four Gospels, to the Knock Shrine, a leading Marian pilgrimage site, to historic abbeys, cathedrals, churches, and high crosses.

Upcoming in 2010, Pope Benedict XVI announced that the 50th International Eucharistic Congress will be held in Dublin in June 2012. This will mark the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marks an important moment of renewal and deepening of the Church's teaching and of her understanding as the Body of Christ and the People of God.
Since Pope Benedict XVI's announcement, many people people have been asking "what exactly is a Eucharistic Congress and what is its purpose?" A Eucharistic Congress is an international gathering of people which aims to:
* promote awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Catholic Church
* help improve understanding and celebration of the Liturgy
* draw attention to the social dimension of the Eucharist

The Congress normally takes place every four years. The daily celebration of the Eucharist is at the very heart of the Congress. The wider programm includes other liturgical and cultural events, testimonies, and workshops during the week of the Congress. The most recent Congress was held in Quebec in 2008 and was a source of encouragement and renewal for the thousands of pilgrims who participated.

A Eucharistic Congress was held in Ireland in 1932, and people from all over the world have begun sending memorabilia relating to the 1932 Congress, some of which will be on display at a special exhibition in 2012. The theme for the Eucharistic Congress is "The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and with one another." The hope is that the theme will contribute to an enriched understanding of the Eucharist as true personal Communion with Jesus Christ and to a renewed understanding of the Church. In the Eucharist we are invited to a personal act of encounter with the Lord who gives himself for us, in Word and Sacrament. That encounter opens the path for new relationships in which we, as Church and as individual Christians are invited to engage in a social mission, in which we in turn are given for others.

The Eucharist is bread for the life of the world (Jn 6:51).

206 Tours is happy to announce that we will be offering a pilgrimage to Dublin for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress in 2012! This 11-day pilgrimage will have all 206 Tours regular inclusions, such as roundtrip airfare, transportation by air-conditioned motor coach, hotel accommodations, breakfast and dinner daily, Mass daily, sightseeing and admissions fees, and more!
