Step Pyramid, Red Pyramid, Bent Pyramid
Today we will visit the Step,
Red and Bent Pyramids. The Step is the earliest form of pyramid.
The
step dates back to the 3rd Dynasty, and consists of several steps. A
descending passage from the north leads to the burial chamber. Underground
galleries surround the pyramid on all but the south sides. The first, and
probably the Only * step pyramid ever completed, is that of King Netjerykhet
Djoser at Saqqara. We will then visit the Red Pyramid, which is the second
largest base of any pyramid in Egypt. However, with it's sides sloping at 43
degrees 22', it is substantially shorter at 343 feet. It is the fourth
highest pyramid ever built in Egypt, with almost 160 layers of stone.
Significantly, the Red Pyramid was the first successful, true, cased Pyramid
built in Egypt, ushering in the era of the Giza style pyramids. We
will conplete our day with a visit to the Bent Pyramid, built by Khufu's
father, Snefru. What really makes this pyramid special today is the lack of
crowds and circus atmosphere that plagues the Giza Plateau, along with the
fact that it can currently be entered without limitation. Not long ago, the
area of Dashur could not be visited, which probably explains why such an
important monument receives so few visitors. The Bent Pyramid was
probably the first planned from the outset to be a true pyramid, with smooth
sides. This represents a glorious period in the evolution of the pyramid,
comparable to that when Djoser's architect, Imhotep, built the Step Pyramid
at Saqqara. The Bent Pyramid was probably either the first or second of
Snefru's pyramids, depending on who built the Medium Pyramid. It was almost
certainly built prior to his other project at Dahshur, the Red Pyramid. The
pyramid is also sometimes called the Rhomboidal, False, or Blunt Pyramid.
The ancient Egyptians called it "Snefru Shines - South (pyramid)".

Tel Aviv – Mt Carmel - Mt Beatitudes –Tiberias
After breakfast we depart
on our scenic drive to Tiberius (Galilee). Enroute we will stop to visit Mt Carmel. Galilee is the northern most part of the modern day state of Israel. It is commOnly * divided into Upper Galilee in the north and Lower Galilee in the south. This lush and mountainous region stretches from the Sea of Galilee and the Hula Valley in the east to the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean in the west. The rich soil, springs, waterfalls and mineral baths promote a much-admired diversity of flora and fauna protected by numerous National Parks and nature reserves. The region is steeped in ancient history and it is no surprise that the country's most extensive archaeological site is to be found here. Beit She'an holds the secrets of past
civilizations. A preserved Roman Amphitheatre and Byzantine baths stand in the midst of other splendid finds.
